About the scientist:

Carl Woese (1928-2012) was an American microbiologist who revolutionized the field of evolutionary biology with his discovery of archaea, a new domain of life distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes. Using molecular techniques, Woese challenged the long-held view of a two-domain system of life and proposed a three-domain system, significantly expanding the understanding of the diversity and evolution of life on Earth. His work paved the way for a new era of research in evolutionary biology, leading to a better understanding of the origins and relationships among living organisms. Woese's contributions to science were recognized with numerous honors, including the National Medal of Science, making him one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century.
